Dexter Episode 6 “If I had a hammer” Recap

by Paul on Nov.02, 2009, under Episode Recaps

Spoilers Within

Wow it’s hard to believe we are now half way through, damn I wish the series was more like a 24 parter :( .  Miami Metro are slow to hear about Trinity’s latest Head goes Splat!murder, which Dexter considers to be a good thing.  Dexter is glad as he wants Trinity to himself, however the more he discovers about Trinity the more Dex realises that he could learn alot from Trinity to help his own life.  Trinity has what Dex believes to be a full facade of a life, Trinity (or should we now call him Arthur Mitchell?) is a devout Christian, he runs teams of people, including his own family to build homes for the homeless, tutors kids, goes to Church & has a very loving family that support each other.

Dexter explains that he cannot go after Trinity yet due to his, or should I say, RITA’S problems.  But is’nt it just because he wants to work out how Trinity is such a successful serial killer?  I mean sure the Rita situation needs to be dealt with, but Dexter has jumbled before and done OK.  Either way he realises that Trinity has completed a cycle so will not begin again for a while, therefore decides to concentrate on poor whiney Rita.

So there’s Rita in her natural state, crying and blaming her hubby for her woes.  And Dex in his natural state of thinking WTF, what can I say?  So the counsellor (played by Roma Maffia from Nip/Tuck) tries to get Dex to ‘hear’ Rita.  I did love how the counsellor, after hearing all of Rita’s complaints about her dear husband, confronts her stating that these traits of Dexter’s were present *before* she married him. Take that COW!

Meanwhile Deb is desperately seeking closure for Lundy’s murder, finds herself shutout from the case and considers bending the rules to close off the case, but after an altercation with the woman she’d be accusing, but feels in he end that her integrity is worth more than closure.  She then turns her attentions back to finding Harry’s misstress and advises Dexter that she may be very close.  Seriously, what is with Deb and the men in her life?  The only stable relationship she has with a man is… Dex…. And well… he’s a serial killer!

The oh so yawnful relationship between LaGuerta and Batista seems to have come to a close (at least on the surface) when they come to a realisation that playing by the rules with their work/relationship they have can’t have their cake and eat it too.  I’d put a vote up whether they’re actually still together or not despite the affidavits but I can only see everyone tapping the “Who fricken cares” button.  This is quite a plague for the show, they seem to struggle making the office subplots interesting. That is of course since Doakes, I miss that dude.

Now onto Quinn & Christine, her first scene is lying on the couch in an undone shirt and a hot bra… Umm Dexter’s ratings keep climbing so I am dumbfounded as to why they feel the need to show more skin?  Don’t get me wrong, she’s fit as you like, but even I feel that is incongruent with Dexter.  So, she asks Quinn a favour – to interview Deb in a ‘hero piece’… Thankfully Quinn denies this request, not sure why they even bothered with this scene (apart from the gratuitous cleavage) but I guess more will come to light in the next episode.  Guessing probably Quinn is put in the middle of a situation in which he is tempted to divulge info to Christine?

Back to Dexter, I laughed my friggin arse off when Dexter bought all those pressies… The breadmaker for Rita, “cos we’re always running out of bread” says Dex, to which Rita responds bitchily “We always run out of milk, did you buy a cow too?”  I thought “nope, cos we already have one!!“.  But I digress, Rita & Dexter sitting back in the counsellor’s office, Dexter is under the pump with Rita demanding to know why he kept the apartment.  He learned from seeing Trinity’s trophy’s, murder weapons etc were right out in the open, so takes a leaf from his book and explains that Rita would leave him if she discovered who he really is.  Rita begins to sympathise and realises that Dexter needed the apartment for ‘me time’ and literally. “I need space to keep my stuff.”I’m thinking GREAT, Dexter keeps his apartment but NO… they compromise and he gets a newly kitted out and rather cramped shed in the backyard!  Way to man-up Dex. The good news is that perhaps this is the end of sooking Rita? Maybe, PLEASE?

If I had a hammerIt’s great to see Dexter & Trinity now interacting with each other.  With Dexter’s research we now know that Trinity’s family was killed, his sister in a bathtub, his mother fell from a great height and his father died from a fatal headwound.  Nice to see my predictions were close (ok, we all knew had something to do with family, duh), I thought his partner/wife etc died in the bathtub, that was before I knew he had a family though. Dex sure pushed his buttons with the sister’s urn hey? I’m really looking forward to next weeks episode “Slack Tide”.

Dexter S04E05 “Dirty Harry” Episode Recap

by Paul on Oct.26, 2009, under Episode Recaps

Spoilers Within

Yet another great episode of Dexter, it begins with our hero running through to the crime scene attempting to get behind the tape, but he is’nt allowed in as he left his forensics pass at home.  Yelling that his sister’s been shot and he works for Miami Metro does not stop the cop from pushing him back, naturally Batista comes to his rescue and yells “Let him through, he’s one of us”. Seriously. WTF. We’ve seen this so many times on sooo many shows, always reminds me of Arnie and his most famous quote: “I’M A COP YOU IDIOT!”. Why does Dexter have to be this unoriginal?  Very very lazy writing guys.

Luckily the episode quickly ramps up from that debarcle and we discover Lundy did’nt make it, we will miss you Keith Carradine.  Lundy has been a favourite character for a while and I somehow think that his death is a little premature in the series, but what the hell do I know.

Dexter in trouble with Rita

Dexter in trouble with Rita

As Dexter rushed out of the house to get to the scene, his forensics badge was not the only thing he left behind.  Back home Dexter’s phone rings and Astor answers it, turns out its about his apartment, the landlord saying that a pipe has burst.  Whoops.  Dexter promised to dump his apartment when he got all nuptial with Rita.  So she confronts Dexter, who manages to evade her for the time being.

Which brings me to the Rita character.  What the hell is going on with her?  In the last two seasons she’s become more annoying, those deeply voiced breathy, whiney fucking questions.  Honestly I wish sometimes Trinity would take the bitch out.  Don’t get me wrong, Julie Benz is a talented actress and cute as a button and yes I get what the writers are doing with the series – Can Dexter have it all.  At the moment seems to be yes, Dexter can have it all.  As long as what he wants is a sister who’s unlucky in love, a nagging wife, screaming kids and a workplace full of sordid love affairs.  Even though I see that they are creating a sense of family and conflict for Dexter do they have to make Rita such a pest? I really wish Dexter would man up and tell Rita that he needs his apartment to get away from her everynow and then cos she is so fucking annoying!

So speaking of affairs.  LaGuerta advises the brass about her involvement with Batista, against his wishes.  Batista at first shows his disdain but does’nt take long to succumb again. Is he really that hard up for a lay? Captain Matthews is back in Miami Metro due to Lundy’s death, and tells LaGuerta that Batista must be transferred out of homicide because of their relationship.

Next is Deb & Anton, she admits to Anton in the hospital that she did the deed with Lundy, he responds by saying they can get through this yada yada yada – But Deb stops him short and says “You deserve so much better”.  This I’ve seen coming for a while as Anton has been a bit of a vague character for a while and needed to be gotten rid of to clear up some room for Deb I guess.  Poor Deb is quite distraught about Lundy and blames herself as if they did’nt rekindle thier love he would’nt have been in the carpark.  Rita poorly explains this as, its’ not your fault ‘life happens’.  Dexter does a better job of helping her feel better.

To finish up the relationship babble, which is really quite dull this season.  Quinn and Christine Hill (reporter).  Quinn, yet another man who is strong, yet weakened by his nether-regions, forgives Christine for printing the story he provided the information for and end up doing the horizontal mambo again.  I wonder how long it will be before she does the same thing, or will Quinn manage to keep his massive gob shut?

Is it just me or did the whole Vaction Murderer storyline seem a bit uninvolving?  It was there and watchable but simply did’nt grab me.  I did like how Batista used the Syphilis information about Rose to lure in his parter.  Even though his partner kills Rose, I’m not sure though if the Vacation Murderer sub-plot is over as in the end was’nt it just a little too easy to bring it to a close?

Trinity Killer takes 3rd Victim - Mask look familiar?

Trinity Killer takes 3rd Victim - Mask look familiar?

Now for what you’ve been waiting for.  Dexter, using Lundy’s voice tapes finds the building where Lundy believed where the Trinity Killer would strike next and actually had a run-in with him.  In the security room in the building, Dexter watches Trinity kill his next victim with a hammer.  Chasing Trinity afterwards, Dexter is gob-smacked to tail him to a lovely suburban house where Trinity kisses his wife at the door and fondly greets his children.  Whoa, Dexter believed that Trinity is a “very different monster” all this time and we were led to believe that Trinity was so successful because he lived a solitary life. Now Dexter discovers that Trinity is just like him, living a complete lie of a life to pursue their victims and feed thier darkest needs.

By the way… If you missed the episode you can watch an online stream of it here.

Dexter S04E04 “Dex Takes a Holiday” Episode Recap

by DexFan on Oct.20, 2009, under Episode Recaps

Following on from last week’s episode we last saw Dexter, clearly busted by Rita as he smashed the light.  I found it very disappointing that they saw fit to cut to the next day and explain the whole situation away as Dexter being ’stressed’… lame copout that was.  I wanted to see Dexter use his talents to get outta that one!  Pah.Zoe-on-the-table

So as poor Dexter is stressed, Rita takes the kids to a wedding out of town allowing time for him to have some R&R.  Not the normal kind of rest naturally, but a new victim.  Meet Zoe, a hot, hardcore copper.  She also killed her family.  Dexter runs around and does his normal due diligence to ensure her guilt.  Harry pops in (yawn) and continues to lecture Dex on his time constraints, being a full time father and all.  Again Harry explains that one of the reasons Trinity has evaded capture for so long is that he has no family.  For a moment Dex even sympathises with his new victim.

Quinn’s over active gob gets him in trouble as his bed-buddy naturally uses all he told her about the Trinity investigation and Lundy’s arrival in Miami.  LaGuerta is pissed about this and removes his visitor priveleges.  Trinity reads the article in the paper later indentifies him at what Lundy believes to be the location of his next kill.  The two have a dramatic, but minor encounter, Lundy takes note: ‘Eyes: blue, and there was something in them’.

Batista & LaGuerta have a few issues, LaGuerta wants to disclose thier relationship to the brass to ensure everything is above board.  Batista is’nt ready for the relationship to be ‘out there’ as then its defined.  In the ‘other’ relationship, Quinn has words with his reporter girlfriend and dumps her, but I don’t think that’s the last we’ll see of her.

As Dexter has an epiphany that ‘he loves his family’ while Zoe is on the table, Lundy spills all his feelings to Deb, she ends up smooching walking together, smiling as BANG Deb is shot, followed by Lundy.  Both fall to the ground it appears that Deb could still be alive but appears that Lundy has snuffed it.  As the shooter takes Lundy’s wallet, I guess it’s the Vacation Murderer.

Who will actually die?

  • Lundy (85%, 22 Votes)
  • Neither, both survive (12%, 3 Votes)
  • Both (4%, 1 Votes)
  • Deb (-1%, 0 Votes)

Dexter S04E03 “Blinded by the Light” Episode Recap

by DexFan on Oct.13, 2009, under Episode Recaps

behiiinnnddyooouuuAaaahh poor Dexter, can’t seem to get a break.  The first episode he was fraught by fatigue due to baby Harrison.  Now there’s a vandal in his new neighbourhood which has his neighbour’s panties in a bunch all going vigilante to find the culprit.  They install high intesity security lights (hence the episode title) and organise a neighbourhood watch group every night.  This does not make Dexter’s night duties any simpler.  He is desperately, perhaps even a little too hard, trying to get in good with his neighbours as it is perfect for his camouflage.  But now that they are cramping his nightly activities what’s he to do?

Believing the vandal to be Jesse, son of a neighbour named  Andy, Dexter attempts to scare him as Jesse leaves his house.  Just as Dexter is about to pounce he is chased by the neighbourhood watch patrol blazing their flashlights.  His plan foiled and more than humiliated to be chased like a street punk, Dexter manages to escape.  Astor takes a shine to Jesse, the ‘badboy’ teenager who Dexter believes is the neighbourhood vandal.  Dexter manages to embarass poor Astor as she tries to get close to Jesse.  Fortunately Astor forgives Dexter for being ‘dumb’ and things are smoothed over.  After taking another chance to find the vandal, Dexter discovers that its actually Jesse’s father, Andy who has been terrorising the neighbourhood.  Dexter scares the crap outta him and it looks like that family will be leaving town.

As the Trinity Killer takes his 2nd victim for the show, Lundy explains how he works.  His first victim is a young woman bled to death in a bath.  The 2nd is a married mother of two falling from a height and the 3rd is a man bludgeoned to death.  The first two have taken place, the third will probably be next week in the episode entitled “Dex Takes a Holiday”.  There is even some conjecture that Trinity’s next victim will be a big character in the series.  Quinn, Lundy, Deb’s lover Briggs maybe?  Briggs is my guess, he’s become a bit of  a ‘nothing’ character on the show.  Sure he was the skinner victim back in season 3, and had a few romantic issues with Deb of course… But now they’re just shagging and Deb is even wishing he was’nt around so much.  So who do you think the Trinity Killer will take next?

It's already OverWe are now seeing more of the Trinity Killer, and gaining some more insight into his motivations.  He certainly has some mother issues, when he kills his 2nd victim, he looks at her body smashed up on the ground and cries ‘Mommy’, just loud enough for us to hear.  I have a feeling that the 2nd victims are always something to do with his mother, the first (young woman bleeding to death in the bath), is related to a lover of his and perhaps the 3rd is Daddy?

I do enjoy the comparision between Trinity and our hero Dexter.  Dexter the one who fakes a normal life all the way through to blend in and according to Dexter’s theory, Trinity who is a complete loner and does’nt even try to maintain friendships or a ‘normal’ life.  Could Dexter begin to crave the life of a loner rather than his extraordinary efforts to maintain a seemingly tedious family life?

Dexter S04E02 “Remains to be Seen” Episode Recap

by DexFan on Oct.05, 2009, under Episode Recaps

Dexter-S04E02-1The second episode shoots off from last week’s premiere with a view of flashing lights and our hero, Dexter, trapped in his van.  Concsious in the ambulance, but suffering from a bout of amnesia Dexter fears that Benito Gomez is still in his car, in neatly wrapped pieces.  Dexter must take care of his remains before someone finds them. Keeping viewers in delicious suspense we follow Dexter after he refuses Doctor’s orders to stay in for observation.

Suffering from concussion and memory loss, Dexter attempts to retrace his steps to locate the remains of Benny Gomez before someone else does.  Harry makes many appearances during these scenes, hammering home that he is “spinning too many plates”.  Something’s got to give.

Desperate in his search, Dexter hopes that no one is murdered today, so he can focus on finding his lost luggage.  Naturally, Dexter has no luck and is forced to investigate another “Vacation Murders” crime scene.  Where he also spots Quinn pocketing cash from the murder victims home, Quinn knows he was spotted, but it’s too late. With time running out to find Gomez, Harry assists and Dexter finally realises he must go to the beginning of the night… the boxing ring where he finds the remains of Gomez stashed in a boxing bag.

Quinn quickly changes tone towards Dexter knowing that he was seen grabbing the cash.  Dexter with no time and no patience blows up at Quinn, yelling “I have a life, you have a life.  Let’s just leave it at that.” Leaving Quinn literally speechless.

Also Rita discovers that Dexter lied about the severity of the accident, meets him at the Miami Metro and demands that he be cut some slack from his work duties.  Dexter explains that all the members in the office work the same, and that’s the way it is.

Meanwhile Lundy & Deb meet to discuss the Lisa Bell Case which is part of the ‘Trinity Killer” investigation.   Conversation turns personal as both exclaim that they are happy and that nothing will happen between them.

With the day wrapped up, so to speak, Dexter relaxes in bed, finally able to get some sleep, as his eyes close, inches away from sleep… “Waahh waaahh waaahhhh” Baby Harrison cries…. “Fuck.”

All in all a pretty good episode, not quite as enthralling as the premiere.  I did really enjoy watching Dexter retrace his steps, tired and concussed.  Wondering; Did I do the smart thing or did I do something dumb and leave the body somewhere I should’nt?   Hardly turning into his overly-potty-mouth sister, but did anyone else notice that Dexter swore twice?  I wonder if this is part of a plotline where Dexter’s mask keeps slipping as his life becomes more complicated?

Rita is becoming quite an annoyance to me, in the first episode she’s ultra demanding on Dexter.  I mean, she’s regularly mentioned previously that she managed to raise two kids ‘all on her own’.  Now when she discovered that Dex’s accident was’nt so minor, she’s all up in his butt about how much his work is pressuring him!  Pah!

Next week’s episode “Blinded by the Light” will surely be interesting.  Dexter’s Dark Passenger will be hampered by a local effort in his neighbourhood to curb vandalism, added to this Rita insists on driving him anywhere.
