Methadone for Dexter Fans

Emmy nom nom nom nom….

I know I’ve been a tad absent lately, and I do apologise. The 2009 Emmy Nominations were out last week and naturally I knew about Dexter’s nominations but had very little time to write it up. Many thanks to Sean who tweeted and gave me the extra kick up the bum I needed to get my fingers typing, thanks mate!

OK ’nuff crapola, down to business, as every Dexter fan knows by now this is no longer news… but suck it up & read it anyway

This year Dexter has 3 nominations, the biggest being Outstanding Drama Series. Last year Dexter lost out to “Mad Men”, now this show is a favourite of mine too.  But I personally believe Dexter should have taken the award, but as you can tell… I’m just a little biased.  However Showtime report that Dexter Season 3 report that:

The third season premiere of Showtime’s “Dexter” broke a record for the network Sunday night, jumping 21% from last year.

“Dexter” averaged 1.2 million viewers, the highest-rated premiere of a Showtime drama since at least 2004 (when Nielsen changed the way the network’s ratings are tabulated). The second season premiere of “Dexter” was the previous record holder.

So with Showtime hitting record viewers, Dexter is in for a solid chance this year as Outstanding Drama Series…. If not… Sick ‘em Dex!

Of course Michael C. Hall has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, as he was last year but lost to Bryan Cranston of “Breaking Bad” for his role as Walter White. Bryan is awesome as the lead in the show, he deserved the Emmy and BB is overall an excellent show.  However this year I am hoping that MCH kicks his meth boiling butt!

Third and final Dexter nomination goes to Jimmy Smits for his role as Miguel Prado in Season 3, Jimmy is up for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Jimmy was absolutely brilliant as Dexter’s only ‘true’ friend and rocked every episode of Season 3.  Best of luck to you Jimmy.

When Dexter returns later this year, six months will have taken place on-screen.  Newlyweds Rita and now Daddy Dexter have a baby boy. Unfortunately that means viewers will miss out on the actual childbirth.

Exec Producer Sara Colleton revealed to Entertainment Weekly:

“This season, we’re going to deal with: Can a serial killer juggle a personal life, work, and his ‘dark passenger’? executive producer Sara Colleton told Entertainment Weekly. “In other words, can Dexter have it all? Which is something all of us grapple with every day of our lives. So we’re taking something that is a very human dilemma and putting it through the prism of Dexter’s special needs.”

In addition to this juggling act, a new male (yet to be cast) antagonist will be entering Dexter’s life and will “cross paths with Dexter in a major and dramatic way” announces Colleton.  “He will illuminate a lot about Dexter’s life and force him to make some tough choices.”

As if Dexter won’t have enough to deal with, his sister Debra (and for the first season, Michael C. Hall’s real-life wife, Jennifer Carpenter), will unwittingly shed light on his dark secret.  “All the way through the season, Deb — in her need to know her father more — is going to get closer and closer to figuring out who Dexter’s mother was and her relationship with her father,” says Colleton.

So might the day come when Dex is forced to slice up his foster-sister? “That is inconceivable to me,” declares Colleton. “Deb and Dexter are the best brother-and-sister team ever.”

This Dexter fan can hardly wait.  Will Rita be a nag poor Dexter and not let him out of the house to attend his is darkest needs?  How about Rita’s secret that Dexter is her 3rd husband?  However it plays out, season 4 is shaping up to be as plot-twisty and addictive as ever.

The new Dexter iPhone game is expected to hit the iTunes store this summer.  The dialogue of the game written by Timothy Schlattman one of the show’s actual writers and Michael C. Hall, who plays Dexter, will voice the game.  The game currently in development with Marc Ecko Entertainment and Icarus Studios is based on the plot of the first season of Dexter and will be investigative by nature, much like the series.

Marc Fernandez, Vice President of Marc Ecko Entertainment, said:

“I am so excited to have Icarus Studios on board to develop the DEXTER iPhone game. From the second we began this project we wanted to throw everything we had at it, that’s exactly why we wanted Icarus Studios as a partner – a 100 person plus developer focusing their technology on making the DEXTER game the best it can possibly be.”

As mentioned above, the game activity revolves around the events of the first season of the show and involves puzzle solving, stealth tactics, mini-games and cool slashing action using the iPhones sensors.  The movements are:  Tilt the iPhone left and right, then use the forward and backward buttons on-screen, use a virtual joystick in the lower corner of the screen and of course the slashing action to finalise your just cause.

A further feature is the “Mask meter”, as Dexter’s survival depends on his double-life remaining secret, the player will need to keep this in mind with all interactions activities.  If the player slips up the meter will drop, if it depletes it’s game over.

Many fans are suspicious about these high resolution images, but Marc assures us that the quality of the images are representative of the actual game (see gallery below).

Even though the game will be put on iTunes as a “Premium” game with a premium price tag, all in all I can’t wait for this game to plonk on to my iPhone, also rumours are abound at the possibilty of future game releases based on subsequent seasons of the show.

Michael C. Hall

Emotionally disconnected from the world, Dexter Morgan views his life from a birdseye view.  His days are spent investigating crime scenes as a bloody spatter analyst for Miami Metro Homicide division.  With his girlfriend Rita and her two kids from a previous marriage as well as foul-mouthed adoptive sister Debra.

The closest Dexter can come to feeling any emotion is when he kills.  His bloodlust cannot be contained, however Dexter’s adoptive father Harry Morgan, a now deceased and famous policeman, knew what Dexter was.  As he loved Dexter, he became to train him in “The Code”, an ethos to channel his need for killing and evade detection by the law.

Although not a fully-fledged officer, Dexter has access to Police resources which he uses to find, assess and hunt killers who have escaped the justice system, the only way he can justify his bloodlust.

Our favourite serial killer actor, Michael Carlyle Hall has his 38th birthday today. MCH has had a stellar year, with Dexter Season 3 bringing in millions of new veiwers to Showtime and had several award nominations throughout the year.  Surely MCH is looking forward filming Dexter Season 4 this year.

Many TV fans know that he played David Fisher in the HBO original series “Six Feet Under” (2001-05).
His first acting role was as Agent Klein in the 2003 movie “Paycheck.”, six years ago when he was 32.

Now that his marriage to costar sister Jennifer Carpenter is one month old I wonder how they’re doing?  More importantly, what did Jennifer get him..?  Being Australian (and living in the UK) I have no interest in American Football, but with Michael’s birthday falling on Superbowl Sunday, how did the newlywed’s spend their day?  Munching on hotdogs & watching the game or playing hide the sausage?

Happy Birthday Michael & we can’t wait to see you in Season 4!
