Julie met Dexter thanks to Debra, who responded to domestic violence call sparked by Rita’s ex-hubby Paul.  To Dexter, he could not have a more perfect girlfriend than Rita.  Scarred by abusive drug addict Paul, Rita is ‘damaged’ and completely uninterested in sex which is exactly what Dexter needs in a partner.  Rita stuggles raising two children Astor and Cody on a limited income.  Together Dexter and Rita manage to create a sense of balance in their difficult lives.
